What You will Learn

This presentation discusses Adverse Childhood Experiences and how they impact patient health outcomes in adulthood. A review of the science that outlined ACE's will be discussed as well as the prevalence and impact of them for various populations. Lastly, screening tools to assess a client's ACE's in children and adults will be discussed as well as recommended treatment options across the lifespan.

  • Participants will be able to identify the eleven ACE's and potential health outcomes in adulthood resulting from them.

  • Participants will be able to identify specific populations at higher risk for having higher ACE scores.

  • Participants will be able to consistently screen patients/clients for ACE's and will be able to develop actionable treatment plans taking ACE's into consideration.

Anne Thatcher

Dr. Anne Thatcher is a board-certified and doctorly prepared Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) offering psychiatric diagnostic assessment, medication management, and psychotherapy to children, adults, and geriatric patients via telehealth. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology and French at the University of Wisconsin—Madison, a Masters in Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes—Jewish College, a Doctor of Nursing Practice at the University of Missouri—St. Louis, and is currently working on a PhD in Nursing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She completed her nurse practitioner residency training at the St. Louis VA Medical Centers and Compass Health Network-a Federally Qualified Health Center. She then worked as a PMHNP at the St. Louis VA Medical Center working inpatient, outpatient, and on the Consult and Liaison team. She has expertise in caring for patients experiencing mood disorders, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive and related disorders, psychotic disorders, trauma and stress-related disorders, ADHD, addictions, chronic pain, dementia, and those with complex psychiatric and medical comorbidities. Additionally, Dr. Thatcher has been an Assistant Teaching Professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis where she directed the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner track of the DNP program. Dr. Thatcher provides culturally competent, trauma-informed, holistic care with a strength-based and person-centered approach and has vast experience in working with patients from diverse racial, ethnic, religious/spiritual, and socio-economic backgrounds. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, she is an advocate of the expression of self-identity, no matter how one identifies. She uses a team mentality when providing care and sees the captain of the team as the patient. Dr. Thatcher provides extensive education to patients about all available treatment options and helps them identify their preferred individualized plan of care. Dr. Thatcher provides several psychotherapeutic modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Supportive Psychotherapy. She has extensive experience in working with adolescents in developing life skills and the establishment of self-identity during an often tumultuous stage of life. Lastly, she specializes in working with biologically female patients experiencing mental health issues across the lifespan including during puberty, pre-pregnancy, ante- and postpartum, and menopause. Her goal is to support patients as they progress on their journey to mental wellness and toward living their optimal lives.
