What You will Learn

Clients who appear resistant, disengaged, or stuck can leave even experienced clinicians questioning their approach. This presentation introduces Fred Hanna's Precursors of Change Model, a practical framework for identifying the client conditions that facilitate meaningful therapeutic change. Participants will learn to assess the seven precursors of change and apply targeted clinical strategies to enhance engagement, increase readiness for change, and improve treatment outcomes.

  • Identify the seven Precursors of Change described and explain their role in facilitating therapeutic change.

  • Assess which precursor(s) may be limiting client engagement or progress in the counseling process.

  • Apply evidence-informed clinical strategies to strengthen specific precursors and enhance client readiness for change.
