What You will Learn

This program is a two-part series created to educate and engage participants in the process of supporting undocumented and immigrant populations in equity minded services. The presenter will share a variety of theoretical frameworks, creative approaches, and practical applications to support clinicians in gaining awareness of their own strengths and growing edges within this work. Participants should come prepared to engage in critical reflection of systems of oppression and implicit bias as they pertain to this special population, with some focus on policy, educational and career implications. This session will also focus on current anti-immigrant agendas and policies and their impact on mental health and well-being for immigrant populations. The need to support this special population is evermore significant since the pandemic, social unrest, and anti-immigrant sociopolitical policies, laws, and public sentiment which have exacerbated mental health concerns amongst immigrant communities including increased depression, anxiety, and suicidal behaviors. Special attention will be paid to increasing advocacy and social justice skills while empowering the community.

  • Participants will be able to increase understanding, background knowledge, and skills as related to supporting the undocumented and immigrant populations.

  • Participants will learn about information on best practices and evidence-based theories to use when providing services for undocumented and immigrant populations.

  • Participants will learn to use research and resources and what resources to use during personal, academic, and career services for undocumented and immigrant populations.

  • Participants will be able to articulate strategies to increase culturally sensitive and responsive support towards the undocumented and immigrant populations.
