What You will Learn

In this presentation, we will explore the pathophysiology of depression. We will discuss the different pharmacotherapeutic treatment options including SSRIs, SNRIs, and other antidepressants. The bulk of this presentation will explore the question of what do we do when traditional medications are not working. We will discuss noninvasive outpatient treatment options for depression focusing on transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). We will break down the mechanism of how TMS works, the neurophysiology it is affecting, evidence for its efficacy, and practical considerations for TMS.

  • Participants will learn about TMS a non-invasive option for treatment resistant depression.

  • Participants will be able to understand the mechanism, indication, and practical considerations for TMS.

Puneet Lakhmani

Puneet Lakhmani MD MS, Rosecrance Therapies’ new medical director, studied Neuroscience at Davidson College where he also worked as a volunteer firefighter. He earned a master’s degree in Biostatistics and Epidemiology from Northwestern University. He completed his medical degree at Tulane University and his residency at the University of Tennessee where he served as chief resident. He completed his fellowship in Addiction Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago. As an addiction medicine physician, he specializes in the medical management of substance use disorders and their psychiatric and medical comorbidities. His focus is on medication-assisted recovery and medication management of mental health disorders including but not limited to depression, anxiety, ADHD, and OCD.
