What You will Learn

Be prepared to develop insights about how you and/or your clients respond to behaviors that reflect bias. Be prepared to engage in an experiential process that will help towards becoming a more effective clinician.

  • Participants will define racism.

  • Participants will become more aware of their implicit and explicit biases and specifically how this impacts their relationships with their clients.

  • Participants will become more aware of how our clients’ reactions towards us impact how we move in the therapeutic space.

  • Participants will learn to apply their understanding to specific clinical cases and reflect on how this has impacted our client relationships.

N. Karen Thames

Dr. Karen is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with over 17 years of clinical experience working with individuals, couples, and families. She has an eclectic approach to therapy, with a psychodynamic conceptualization of her clients, using different methods in therapy including insight-oriented therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, family systems, and feminist relational therapy. Dr. Karen has also had extensive training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. She sees each client as an individual with unique needs that require a customized, unique, and client-centered approach. Due to Dr. Karen’s experiences with chronic illness, she used her journey to make a difference in the world. She uses her nonprofit (Empowering People with Invisible Chronic Illness-The EPIC Foundation) to impact people living with invisible chronic illnesses. As a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, she also continues to conduct professional webinars, provide Clinical consultation to other clinicians, and conduct virtual teletherapy. Dr. Karen believes in looking at the whole person-mind, body, and soul. She sees clients from all backgrounds with a deep interest in multicultural psychology and diversity and inclusion. Dr. Karen is also available to provide faith based therapy to those who seek it. “I want to take my skills along with my personal experiences and use them to make a difference in the world. I believe in empowering you to be the ‘captain of your ship’ when it comes to your own journey and the people you allow on your ‘crew’ to help you navigate this world.
