What You will Learn

Dr. N. Karen Thames, Clinical Psychologist, continues to explore the impact of racism and bias on the provider-patient/client relationship. We will continue to unpack Cultural transference and Cultural countertransference and what gets triggered for either the patient or provider that can impact rapport and treatment outcomes . Be prepared to develop more insights about how you and/or your clients/patients respond to behaviors that reflect bias. Be prepared to engage in an experiential process that will help towards becoming a more effective provider. This is Part 2 of a 2 part series.

  • Participants will become more aware of what role countertransference plays and how we can be triggered by our patients/clients.

  • Participants will self-reflect more on how this shows up with specific clinical cases.

N. Karen Thames

Dr. Karen is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with almost 20 years of clinical experience working with individuals, couples, and families. She has an eclectic approach to therapy, with a psychodynamic conceptualization of her clients, using different methods in therapy including insight-oriented therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, family systems, and feminist relational therapy. She sees each client as an individual with unique needs that require a customized, unique, and client-centered approach. Dr. Karen is the Founder and Executive Director of The EPIC Foundation, a 501C3 non-profit organization that supports patients and families affected by invisible chronic illnesses. As a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, she also continues to conduct professional webinars, provide Clinical consultation to other clinicians, and conduct therapy. Dr. Karen is the Chair of the DEI committee at The Juniper Center, a private practice with 7 practice locations, and has expertise in cultural competency. Additionally, Dr. Karen is the President of the Executive Board of Directors of The Juniper Center’s non-profit arm, Bridging the Gap Collective. Dr. Karen believes that Together, we are EPIC!
