What You will Learn

In this presentation, we will explore what's going on inside of us while practicing as therapists. We will learn ways to stay focused and grounded while taking in the stories that we hear. We will learn to mitigate the possibility of invalidating others due to our own internal activation, and learn to increase our ability to remain impartial even when attached to outcomes and invested in others' well-being. We will learn to accept others and ourselves as we truly are and model wisdom and self-regulation during our time with clients, which will reinforce our own power, authenticity, and efficacy as catalysts for growth.

  • Participants will feel comfortable describing how you use yourself as an object for others, and create the beginnings of a plan for intentional use of self.

  • Participants will be able to identify at least one area where you bring implicit bias into your work, and come up with at least one idea as to to decrease such bias.

  • Participants will be able to create a plan to bring a deeper sense of comfort to yourself while you are working.

Caren Jeskey

Caren Jeskey has intuitively helped the underdog since she was a young child. Caren's Grandma Marie always told her "say hello to everybody," which is what her mother had also told her. An internal drive to take care of others led her to a master's degree in social work, and a long career bringing food, medicine, transportation to those whose access was deprived. Later in life Caren understood that deep intergenerational trauma in her lineage contributed to her sense that life is not fair for many humans. Firmly in middle age, Caren now sees that caring for herself has to come before good works, unless burnout is the goal. She enjoys helping others get back to their breath. Back to nature. Back to simplicity.
